Fix
AGENTS.md vs .cursorrules
Answer
AGENTS.md is plain Markdown project instructions for any coding agent that reads it, including Cursor. Put it in the repo root. Use .cursor/rules/*.mdc when the instruction should apply only in Cursor. A root .cursorrules file is legacy and will be deprecated. Loadout free packs ship both AGENTS.md and a .cursor/rules file.
- Scope Tool-agnostic. Written against Cursor project rules (.mdc), Claude Code CLAUDE.md, AGENTS.md, and GitHub Copilot repository instructions as documented on 2026-10-15.

Use AGENTS.md when one instruction file should travel with the repo. Use .cursor/rules/*.mdc when the instruction is for Cursor alone. A root .cursorrules file is the old Cursor-only file. The Vibe Coder Starter pack ships both AGENTS.md and .cursor/rules/vibe-coder-starter.mdc, plus CLAUDE.md and .github/copilot-instructions.md. Its pinned scope is: Tool-agnostic. Written against Cursor project rules (.mdc), Claude Code CLAUDE.md, AGENTS.md, and GitHub Copilot repository instructions as documented on 2026-10-15. Every Loadout free zip does the same. The packs are /packs/vibe-coder-starter, /packs/nextjs-supabase, /packs/unity-6, and /packs/godot-4. Cursor precedence is /fixes/cursor-rule-sources-and-precedence. .mdc frontmatter is /fixes/cursor-mdc-rule-frontmatter.
AGENTS.md is a README for agents: standard Markdown, with no required fields. Put it at the repository root. A nested AGENTS.md covers a subproject. The AGENTS.md site says the closest file to the edited file wins, and a chat prompt overrides the file. The format is for agents that adopted it, including Cursor, Codex, Amp, Jules, Gemini CLI, Windsurf, Aider, and Zed. The Agentic AI Foundation under the Linux Foundation stewards it. Checked against https://agents.md/.
Cursor picks up a root AGENTS.md automatically. A nested file applies when Agent works in that directory or its children. Nested instructions combine with parents, and more specific instructions take precedence. AGENTS.md has no description, globs, or alwaysApply. A .mdc file uses those fields for Always Apply, Apply Intelligently, Apply to Specific Files, or Apply Manually. A plain .md file in .cursor/rules is ignored. Checked against https://cursor.com/docs/rules.
The .cursorrules file in the project root is legacy and will be deprecated. Create a new Cursor rule, copy the text, set Always Apply, and delete .cursorrules. If other agents should read that text, put it in AGENTS.md. Loadout does not ship .cursorrules. Each free zip puts AGENTS.md at the root and the Cursor rule at .cursor/rules/<slug>.mdc. vibe-coder-starter sets alwaysApply: true and globs: "**/*". Unity 6 sets globs: "**/*.cs" with alwaysApply: false. Godot 4 sets globs: "**/*.gd" with alwaysApply: false. The Next.js pack sets alwaysApply: false and globs: "{app,src,lib,components}/**/*.{ts,tsx},proxy.ts,middleware.ts,**/*.sql". Those globs attach only in Cursor. Mark an RPC with `[Rpc(SendTo.Server)]` and end the method name in `Rpc`. A missing `Rpc` suffix is an error. Do not write new `[ServerRpc]` or `[ClientRpc]` methods.
A client asks the server with `SendTo.Server`. The server talks to observers with `SendTo.NotServer`, or `SendTo.ClientsAndHost` when a host must run the method too. There is no direct client-to-client connection. The server forwards it.
Keep shared state on a `NetworkVariable<T>` and use `.Value`. It is sent to clients already connected and to a client that joins later. An RPC is not. Write `.Value` from the server when write permission is `NetworkVariableWritePermission.Server`.
Put a `NetworkObject` on the networked prefab and spawn it on the server. Do not use the removed UNet types `NetworkIdentity`, `[Command]`, or `UnityEngine.Networking`.Unity 6, Godot 4, and Next.js Pro rules, $1+Vibe Coder Starter pack — Safe defaults for any AI coding agent, in any stack.

Questions
- What is AGENTS.md versus .cursorrules?
- AGENTS.md is plain Markdown project instructions for any coding agent that reads it, including Cursor. Put it in the repo root. Use .cursor/rules/*.mdc when the instruction should apply only in Cursor. A root .cursorrules file is legacy and will be deprecated. Loadout free packs ship both AGENTS.md and a .cursor/rules file.
- Does Cursor read AGENTS.md?
- Yes. Cursor picks up a root AGENTS.md automatically, and a nested AGENTS.md when Agent works in that directory or its children. It is plain Markdown with no frontmatter. For Always Apply, Apply Intelligently, Apply to Specific Files, or Apply Manually, use a .mdc file in .cursor/rules. A plain .md file there is ignored.
- Do Loadout free packs ship AGENTS.md and a Cursor rule?
- Yes. Every free zip includes AGENTS.md at the project root and .cursor/rules/<slug>.mdc with the same rules. The packs are /packs/vibe-coder-starter, /packs/nextjs-supabase, /packs/unity-6, and /packs/godot-4. None of them ships a .cursorrules file.
