Fix

Codex CLI AGENTS.md

Answer

Codex reads AGENTS.override.md if that file is non-empty, otherwise AGENTS.md. It checks ~/.codex once, unless CODEX_HOME is set, then one file per directory from the project root down to the current directory. CLAUDE.md, .cursor/rules, and .github/copilot-instructions.md are not on that list unless you add the filename to project_doc_fallback_filenames. Every Loadout free zip ships AGENTS.md at the project root.

  • Scope Tool-agnostic. Written against Cursor project rules (.mdc), Claude Code CLAUDE.md, AGENTS.md, and GitHub Copilot repository instructions as documented on 2026-10-15.

The Vibe Coder Starter pack ships AGENTS.md at the project root for Codex. Its pinned scope is: Tool-agnostic. Written against Cursor project rules (.mdc), Claude Code CLAUDE.md, AGENTS.md, and GitHub Copilot repository instructions as documented on 2026-10-15. CLAUDE.md versus AGENTS.md is /fixes/claude-code-claude-md-vs-agents-md. Cursor rule files are /fixes/cursor-rule-sources-and-precedence. The Copilot path is /fixes/github-copilot-instructions-md.

Codex builds the instruction chain when a run starts. Global scope is ~/.codex, unless CODEX_HOME is set. It uses only the first non-empty file there: AGENTS.override.md, otherwise AGENTS.md. Project scope starts at the project root, typically the Git root, and walks down to the current directory. If there is no project root, only the current directory is checked. Each directory contributes at most one file, in this order: AGENTS.override.md, AGENTS.md, then project_doc_fallback_filenames. The sample config sets that list to [] and project_doc_max_bytes to 32768. Empty files are skipped. Codex stops adding files once the combined size reaches 32 KiB. Files are joined from the root down with blank lines. A closer file overrides earlier guidance because it appears later. Checked against https://developers.openai.com/codex/guides/agents-md and https://developers.openai.com/codex/config-sample.

CLAUDE.md is what Claude Code reads. It does not read AGENTS.md on its own, root or nested. .cursor/rules/*.mdc is a Cursor project rule. GitHub Copilot reads .github/copilot-instructions.md. Codex discovery does not name those paths. A filename is ignored unless it is AGENTS.override.md, AGENTS.md, or listed in project_doc_fallback_filenames. Set project_doc_fallback_filenames in ~/.codex/config.toml, then start a new Codex command. The chain is rebuilt on the next run.

Every Loadout free zip includes AGENTS.md at the project root, plus CLAUDE.md, .cursor/rules/<slug>.mdc, and .github/copilot-instructions.md. The packs are /packs/vibe-coder-starter, /packs/nextjs-supabase, /packs/unity-6, and /packs/godot-4. None of them ships AGENTS.override.md or a Codex config file. Copy AGENTS.md to the repository root for Codex. Each pack's CLAUDE.md adds a Claude Code section that is not in AGENTS.md, so that section is not in the file Codex reads. The .mdc frontmatter is for Cursor. The Copilot file is the path Copilot reads.

From the Unity 6 Pro rules

Mark an RPC with `[Rpc(SendTo.Server)]` and end the method name in `Rpc`. A missing `Rpc` suffix is an error. Do not write new `[ServerRpc]` or `[ClientRpc]` methods.
A client asks the server with `SendTo.Server`. The server talks to observers with `SendTo.NotServer`, or `SendTo.ClientsAndHost` when a host must run the method too. There is no direct client-to-client connection. The server forwards it.
Keep shared state on a `NetworkVariable<T>` and use `.Value`. It is sent to clients already connected and to a client that joins later. An RPC is not. Write `.Value` from the server when write permission is `NetworkVariableWritePermission.Server`.
Put a `NetworkObject` on the networked prefab and spawn it on the server. Do not use the removed UNet types `NetworkIdentity`, `[Command]`, or `UnityEngine.Networking`.

Questions

Where does the Codex CLI look for AGENTS.md?
Codex reads AGENTS.override.md if that file is non-empty, otherwise AGENTS.md. It checks ~/.codex once, unless CODEX_HOME is set, then one file per directory from the project root down to the current directory. CLAUDE.md, .cursor/rules, and .github/copilot-instructions.md are not on that list unless you add the filename to project_doc_fallback_filenames. Every Loadout free zip ships AGENTS.md at the project root.
Does Codex read CLAUDE.md or .cursor/rules?
No, unless you add that filename to project_doc_fallback_filenames. The sample config sets that list to []. Codex checks AGENTS.override.md, then AGENTS.md, and includes at most one file per directory. Claude Code reads CLAUDE.md. Cursor reads .cursor/rules/*.mdc. GitHub Copilot reads .github/copilot-instructions.md.
Do Loadout free packs ship a file for Codex?
Yes. Every free zip includes AGENTS.md at the project root. The packs are /packs/vibe-coder-starter, /packs/nextjs-supabase, /packs/unity-6, and /packs/godot-4. They also include CLAUDE.md, .cursor/rules/<slug>.mdc, and .github/copilot-instructions.md. They do not include AGENTS.override.md.
